In short: Canned Responses & Email Templates stores your templates locally on your own device, and there is no account. Your templates and messages never leave your device — the extension does not read, collect, or transmit any of their content. To improve the product it does collect anonymous, content-free usage statistics (just which features are used) — this is on by default, and you can turn it off anytime in the options page. The only other data it sends is feedback you choose to submit. Neither ever includes any message or template content.
What the extension stores
The extension saves the data you create — your templates (titles, bodies, shortcuts, tags, favorites) and your settings (hotkey, theme, backup preferences) — using your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local). This data lives on your device.
If you turn on the optional "Sync templates across my devices" setting (off by default), your templates and categories are also kept in Chrome's built-in sync (chrome.storage.sync) so they roam across the Chrome browsers where you're signed in. That uses your own Google/Chrome Sync — not our servers — and still needs no account with us. Turn the setting off to keep everything on one device.
What the extension does not do
- It does not read, scan, collect, store, or transmit the content of your emails or messages — ever, regardless of any setting.
- It does not require an account or sign-in.
- It does not include advertising or third-party advertising trackers.
- It does not include advertising or third-party advertising trackers, and it never transmits the content of your templates, emails, or messages.
- The only data it sends is anonymous, content-free usage statistics (on by default, can be turned off) and feedback you choose to submit — both described below.
Anonymous usage analytics (on by default — you can turn it off)
To understand which features are useful and where to improve, the extension collects a small number of anonymous, content-free usage events. This is controlled by the "Share anonymous usage stats" setting in the options page, which is on by default. You are shown a one-time notice about it, and you can turn it off at any time — when off, the extension transmits nothing.
The events are sent to our analytics provider (PostHog):
- What is sent: event names such as "picker opened", "template inserted", and "template created"; which site they happened on (Gmail or LinkedIn); simple counts (for example, how many templates you have, or how many you import or export); and a random ID that is not linked to your name, email, or any account.
- What is never sent: the content of your templates (titles or bodies), and the content of any email or message — none of it leaves your device.
To turn it off, open the options page and switch off "Share anonymous usage stats" (or choose "Turn off" on the one-time notice).
Feedback (only when you send it)
The extension includes an optional "Send feedback" form in its options page so you can report a bug or request an improvement without leaving the extension. This is entirely user-initiated. When you click Send, the extension simply opens a pre-filled email draft (in Gmail) addressed to us — you review it and send it yourself. The extension does not transmit anything on its own, and there is no background telemetry.
Because you send the email yourself, we receive only:
- Your message — the text you typed, placed into the email draft.
- Your email address, because you are the sender (so we can reply).
We use this only to read and respond to your feedback. The content of your templates and the content of your emails or messages are never included.
Permissions and why they're needed
- Storage — to save your templates and settings locally on your device.
- Context menus — to provide the right-click "Save selection as template" option.
- Site access to mail.google.com and linkedin.com — so the extension can insert a template into the message box you're typing in. It only inserts the text you choose; it does not read or send your messages.
Your data and your control
You can export your templates to a JSON file at any time as a backup, and import them later. Because the data is stored locally, uninstalling the extension removes it from your device — we recommend exporting a backup before uninstalling. Clearing your browser's extension data will also remove it.
Third parties
The only third party the extension sends data to is our analytics provider, PostHog, and only the anonymous, content-free usage events described above (when analytics is on). It never shares your personal data, your templates, or any email or message content with anyone.
About this website
This marketing website (the pages on this domain) is separate from the extension and uses privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics to count visits and see which pages lead to installs. It does not use advertising cookies and does not track you across other websites. The extension's own anonymous, content-free usage analytics — which you can turn off — are described in the section above.
Children's privacy
The extension is intended for general business use and is not directed to children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page. Material changes will be reflected in the extension's store listing.
